The Miraculous Rewards of the Diligent Midwife
Description
Assalamu Alaikum. There is a very old story of a village where there once lived a midwife who solved the problems of [parturient] women as at that time, there were no hospitals [...]. Many people from the surrounding villages came to this midwife and whatever problem a woman had, this midwife solved them. Time passed and the people looked upon this very kind and generous midwife with great respect. As the poor woman did not have any property, the women would keep happily whatever people gave her: some people would give her grains, some clothes and so on. Everyone would give her according to their fortune and she would happily return home. If people were very rich, they would give her a sheep or a goat but at that time there was usually no facility for transporting [the gifts]. The midwife had a small room in which she lived and one night, when she was returning home after completing her work and was resting in the house, a young man knocked on her door. The woman opened having had a lamp in her hand. The young man told the woman that he had come to take her with him as his wife was sick and pregnant. The midwife refused to go with the young man because she did not know the man but the young man replied that he had only recently arrived to the area, therefore the midwife, had not seen him yet. [Finally], the woman went out with the young man without knowing that the young man was not a human being. They traveled by camel and the journey was quite long. Near the forest, they saw a hut where a little light was visible. The man went there, tied the camel, and signaled the midwife to go inside the hut where a beautiful girl was sitting. The young man made a request to the midwife that when the child would be born [successfully], she should not recite Bismillah. Thus when the child was born, she did not recite Bismillah. This went on as two, three, four, [and finally] about 15 children were born. When the 16th child was born, the midwife uttered Bismillah, after which the child birth stopped. Seeing this, the young man became very angry. He entered the room and said: "I did forbade you." Even as she had [broken her promise to] to not recite Bismillah, the man forgave her, fetched her some pieces of coal, and said: "Don't come here again and don't try to reach us." The midwife, in fear, left the place with the coal and returned home in fear. After reaching home, the woman fell asleep after having dropped the coal in a corner. When she woke up the next morning, she saw that the coals had turned into gold, and thereafter she started living a very happy life.
