The Perilous Harvest of Quest for Salajeet

Description

Salajeet is a black or red substance produced by the waste of a cat-like bird known in Shina as shargai. Ac-cording to Najam, it was impossible to gather salajeet alone; it required at least more than two men due to the difficulty of extracting it from narrow caves in large rocks. The team would select one of their thinnest members, tie him with a rope, and lower him 100-200 feet into the cave. Armed with an axe and a can, the person would chip away the salajeet, often risking injury during the descent. This arduous endeavour could take many days, sometimes even a month, and they carried their food along. Once, a villager named Doult Mir was involved in the extraction. After collecting the salajeet and carrying it on his back, the load was too high. He mistakenly stepped on a stone, fell down the hill, and died. Despite the dangers, salajeet was highly valued and sold in the market, highly prized for its numerous medicinal uses.
