Importance of Maintaining and Using Traditional Skills

Description

The people of Shimshal never stretch[ed] out their hands in front of anyone [they did not depend on outsiders]. but produced food for themselves from the land that they had. They produced butter and cheese from goats and collected their hair for making clothing and carpets. Myself, I am also an expert of these things and I still have all necessary tools in my house. My daughter-in-law, my family, still produces these things at home and I am very happy about it. When we gain knowledge [modern education], it is our duty not to destroy our own culture. We may be all proud of our salaries, but if today our Prime Minister cuts or abolishes my pension, it is better that I know how to make arrangements for myself in my own house, make a roof for myself, prepare grains for myself. Maintaining our knowledge means that we can keep alive ourselves, and keep alive others as well. God has given you knowledge, thus, you should keep yourself alive with that knowledge. Let the orphans of your village do such work [get education], so that they do not have to take up the work of thieves.
