Channan Peer and the Desert Mound

Description

A widely known tradition is that the famous Sufi saint, Hazrat Jalaluddin Surkh Posh Bukhari (+ 1291 CE), who is buried in Uch Sharif, once visited the region. At that time, the area was under the rule of a Hindu king named Sindhia. When Hazrat Jalaluddin met the king, he made a prophecy that the first Muslim child would soon be born in the king's reign. At that time, the queen was the only one pregnant, and as fate would have it, she gave birth to a son. Due to his remarkable beauty, the child was named Channan (the "moon-like"). It is said that the child began reciting the Quran from the very first day. Upon hearing his son speak in a foreign language, the king remembered Hazrat Jalaluddin's prophecy and became deeply concerned because, if the nobles learned that the heir apparent had converted to Islam, they might overthrow his rule. Therefore, the king decided to abandon his son on an isolated mound, hoping that hunger and thirst would end the child's life. However, with divine help, the child not only survived but thrived. Channan Peer later became a prominent disciple of Hazrat Jalaluddin Surkh Posh Bukhari, and he was initiated into the spiritual path by Hazrat Jahaniyan Jahangast (another renowned Sufi). Upon returning to his homeland, Channan Peer converted hundreds of Hindus to Islam and spread the faith throughout the region. When Channan Peer passed away, his followers buried him on the same mound where he had been abandoned as a child.
