Origins of Agriculture and Settlement in Sermik: the Tale of the Three Brothers

Description

Once upon a time three brothers came from Chilas where their father gave them some advice before they left. He told them that wherever they stopped, they should dig the ground and put the soil in a container and then pour it back into the hole. If there was some excess soil or if there was some soil missing, then the place was not suitable for agriculture. If, however, the hole was filled back up evenly with the soil, then one of them should stay there. This way, one brother settled at the Osechen (today a place with a lot of mulberry) and the Knurichen area (today a place with a lot of pear) of Sermik and started farming. To the second son, he said: Look here you have a Shangal tree. Wherever you stop, plant this tree. If by next morning the tree is still alive, then settle there. Following his father's advice, this son settled in Droning Skil (which means in the middle of Sarmak). The third son was advised to take some goats along and graze them, observing where they produced the most manure. He should then tell his two brothers: "I will not go further. You stay here. I will take the goats towards the valley." When he reached the Chobar area (between today's two water channel), the goats produced a lot of manure. He settled there and started also some farming by setting up irrigated land.
