The Female Markhor and the Hunter
Description
In our Astore Valley there is a famous tale of a female markhor65 locally known as qill aye. One day, a hunter went to the forest and saw a female markhor along with her young baby and shoots a bullet at the mother. As the animal started to bleed the youngster got scared and inquired his mom about the hunter and the blood. To calm down her baby she told him: "Don't be scared, the man you see is not a hunter but rather a shepherd who has come to watch his cattle." The baby asked: "Why is the red blood coming out of your body?" . She replied: "Don't be afraid, it is not blood, it is the consequence of [ingesting] a plant which gives red colour commonly present in the jungle." Soon after this discussion the female markhor breathed out her life and asked her youngster to join the rest of the markhor herd. Tradition goes that a few days after the hunter brought the dead markhor meat to his home misfortunes came to happen to his family.
