Religious Practices in Shimshal
Description
I am a follower of Allah and have been guided by the guidance of other saints, who used to be preachers against evils shitan. In the past, people [in Shimshal] were poor, but in that poverty they had become true followers of Allah. Whenever there was something important to be done we burned leaves of juniper to make smoke. In my house I use this ritual even until today in our religious festivals majalis and before sowing seeds.
So, by the grace of Allah, in today's time, when new teachings come, I am the first to learn it. Whatever happens in front of my eyes, I am to do it with my belief, with my faith, with my knowledge.
One of our important festivals is Taghum [spring agricultural festival of seeding]. During this ceremony wheat grains are soaked for a month before we make dough out of it. We use this dough to make a sweet dish that we call semen. We put it in wooden pots and each house brings it to the central place of community gathering where we [the community] share the sweet dish. Thereafter we start our special prayers Dua for good yield, happiness and success in life. God will bless our area and our homes as we follow these practices.
