A Visit of Spirits at Harvest
Description
Dumai, a woman from the village, spent her day cutting wheat in the fields until evening approached. Halfway on her way home, she was startled by an unfamiliar sound. Suddenly, she spotted a man on horseback wearing a white cap. She recognized him as a villager who had been severely ill for a long time. According to local belief, when a person near death was visited by a group of spirits jamala, their spirit would be taken unless an animal was sacrificed to possibly save them.
A molvi approached Dumai and advised her to leave, warning of the gathering crowd nearby. She changed her route and hurried away from the fields. As she walked, she heard faint songs, laughter, and the echo of dancing, though she saw no one around. In the songs, they spoke of the [sick] man by name, describing him as so beautiful that even the birds of the forest came to witness his presence in the village. Fear gripped Dumai, and she ran towards her home. A few days later, the man passed away.
