The Mystical Humayun Tree in Shigar

Description

Assalamu Alaikum, I am Ali from Hashupi, Shigar. I have been working in my Hashupi garden for about 30 years and have [during this time] heard many stories about our area that has various natural resources and fertile land. Here, we cultivate wheat, barley, buckwheat, maize, and many other plants whereby all farming was done with traditional oxen-powered methods. But today, people also use modern machinery for farming. There we also have different kinds of stories: In Shigar, there is a place called Sildi where there is a tree named Humayun. People believed that drinking boiled leaves of this tree would cure many illnesses. When women were pregnant, they would strip the bark from the tree and wear it around their necks. The tree did not need water or fertilizer and remained green [year-round]. It was said that if a woman drank the boiled leaves, she would have a boy, and if she ate the fruit of this tree, she would have a girl. Unfortunately, this tree has now withered and no longer exists.
