The Origin of Life in Gais Pain
Description
The ruling of Goharabad [in Diamir] was based on families or tribes of which there were three major ones, the families Katali Hat, Pushali Hat, and Lusni Hat. They selected twelve people from each family and send the 36 people to [what now is] Gais Pain. Although Goharabad has a cold climate, they did not have enough water for their agriculture and depended on rain and the melting water of glaciers and snow during the summers which lack monsoonal rainfall. Due to the cold climate, their cultivation is limited to a few, annual crops. As time passed by and the population increased resources were not enough for them and their cattle, so they decided to cultivate the [surrounding] desert lands. The 36 people selected Gais Pain for the availability of water as is near to the Indus River. The people worked hard but could cultivate only little land of highly fertile clay [glacier-derived loess] because of the elevated daytime temperatures which allowed them to work only at dawn and dusk. They started by cultivating black beans, maize, and wheat one after the other in one season. They did well in crop cultivation but still preferred to live in Goharabad where they could grow fruits like apricots, almonds, walnuts, and most importantly natural fruit pine nuts chilgoza that all over Gilgit Baltistan was only found in Goharabad. The land in Gais Pain was unable to produce such fruits except for grapes and berries. Today, however, modern agriculture allows to grow more crops and fruit trees.
