Ganoni Traditions and Celebrations in Nomal

Description

When I was young, the ginani was celebrated, a harvest ritual where 3 or 7 stalks of barley were cut and brought home, then placed in a wooden frame on the roof to be kept until the same day the next year. During that time the whole region of Nomal would be lively for ten days. People would invite musicians from other areas to come. From Shaprot, they would invite Dnyal Goko, a famous man, and from Danyore, they would invite flute players. This way, the Ganoni ritual was celebrated with great enthusiasm. Different people, including important guests and officers, would join, eat, and enjoy the festivities. The main gathering would take place in the gardens of the Raja family where we would also go to watch. The famous ganoni ritual was celebrated when the wheat had turned slightly brown and was about to ripen. Approximately a week before, people would start gathering for the festivi-ties, enjoy music and dancing. Special arrangements were made for the guests, including the preparation of traditional foods. They would make a thin bread similar to dosa goli and thin breads soaked with butter gulmandi. People would also slaughter animals, cook the meat and dry meat nasalo. This ritual brought the community to-gether, fostering a spirit of celebration and unity as they honoured their agricultural traditions and were thankful for the new harvest.
