The Wisdom of Dadi Jawari and Water Channels

Description

Dadi Jawari, the [legendary female] ruler of Gilgit was famous for projects which she completed with the help of people from other districts. She constructed two water channels for irrigation purposes whereby the local resi-dents were initially against her and didn't help her. However, against all odds she went ahead with the construction of these channels, hired labourers from Diamer district and completed the channels which still exist as a primary source of irrigation water for the farmers of Gilgit. Dadi Jawari used to ride a horse, wore men's clothes, and would visit different areas of Gilgit. She had two intelligent ministers, one was from Darel and the other one from Gohorabad valley near Chilas. On her visit to Diamer she advised the tribes to live peacefully and in harmony. As a widow, she remarried upon request from the people to continue her family lineage.
