The Wise Man Shams Uddin Muhammad

Description

In the name of Allah, the most Gracious, the most Merciful. I will start with the blessed name of Allah. My name is Dolat Ameen, I am 82 years old, I was born here, I am a human being. In 1954, I went from here Shimshal to Gulmit Gojal [for studies as there was no school in Shimshal]. I passed my matriculation from Gilgit in 1966. Thereafter, I was selected for the commission [higher rank] in the Pakistan Army, but the Mir of Hunza asked me to serve the people of Shimshal [instead]. So, I declined the commission job. At that time, the commission officer's starting [monthly] salary was 1000 Pakistani Rupees. I left that job and accepted a job as teacher for 60 Rupees [monthly salary] and by the grace of Allah, I started teaching in 1966. Today, all my students have graduated. Shimshal was established in 1012 A.D. At that time a certain [man with the name of] Mamusha arrived here from Karimabad. He came with his wife who was from Tashkurgan. One day she started to discuss with her husband: "You are from the Burusho tribe and I am from the Wakhan and thus speak Wakhi. You are from the Hunza wazeer family and I am from the Wakhan, wazeer family and I am married to you. So, I request that you keep me in the Gojal area between Wakhi speakers rather than here in Shimshal where we arrived only after travelling on a long mountainous path. I requested you to settle me between Wakhi speakers but you brought me to such a [remote] place where there even are no birds. She was unhappy about it, and started arguing that if he got ill or died she could not even take care of him, nor could she take care of herself. He replied, that if by [bad] luck he died first, then she would take care of him [bury him] and leave. But she didn't listen to him and so the arguments went on. Thereafter, in the morning, evening, and afternoon, when they would meet to eat together, they wouldn't even talk to each other and eventually got [even more] upset. One day, a holy man miraculously came to their house. The wife ran out to call her husband who was busy irrigating the fields. The wife called him in a very compassionate way: "Mamusha, come quickly" . He wondered why his wife who was upset with him at the time would call him so kindly, left his spade and went home. He asked her why she called him and she replied that an elderly holy man with a white beard had come to their house. He thought that maybe his brother had come and his wife did not recognize him. When he entered the house, he saw an elderly man who was clearly not his brother. He asked him: "Where did you come from to our poor abode?" The wise man replied: "Don't worry, when I saw you unhappy, by the guidance of Allah Almighty, I came to your house. I am travelling for the truth, I came on God's grace, don't worry, don't worry, don't worry. You will have a son and from your son this valley [of Shimshal] will be populated." Mamusha said: "I am old, I have reached the age of 60. How can I bear a son?" The wise man replied: Believe me, my name is Shams Uddin Muhammad, as I am here I have come on behalf of Allah Almighty to protect you. That's all."
