Yshani, the Ghost of Gilgit and the Wise old Man
Description
Once upon a time, Yshani, a [female] ghost haunted the people of Gilgit, preying on them. Every day, the ghost would claim the life of a man or a woman, leaving the villagers in a state of constant fear and desperation. One day, an old man arrived in the village and their desperation, the villagers decided to seek his help. They recounted their harrowing experience with Yshani, hoping the old man could provide a solution. The old man listened carefully and devised a plan. When Yshani appeared to claim another victim, the old man addressed her, saying: "Your brother is dead." This news saddened the ghost, causing it to forget its hunger momentarily. "Is my brother truly dead? Yshani asked. Yes, he is dead the old man confirmed. His body lies on the mountain, no one has collected it. The ghost, filled with sorrow, pleaded, and put one of her hands on her head. The old man pinned the hand on her head, then he led the ghost up the mountain. As they climbed, the ghost inquired: How did my brother die? In your memory, your brother died, the old man said. As she placed her other hand on her chest, the old man also pinned it. After binding the ghost completely, the old man returned to the village and shared the event with the people. He told them: When I die, bury me in front of the statue of Yshani. This way, the shrine will remain closed forever, and the ghost will never return." The villagers followed the old man's instructions, and Yshani of Gilgit never haunted them again. Peace was restored, and the old man's wisdom was remembered and honoured for generations.
