Trefuing and Satrbfa Offerings as Essential Elements of Balti Culture

In the old days, two types of offerings were made: one called trefuing and the other one satrbfa. For the offerings, people would put butter on juniper shukpa needles and serve it with a Balti dish made of barley subkhur in a special process along with various other dishes. After this, people would return home and engage in various programs, such as musical events, staying awake all night. The real purpose of making the trefuing and satrbfa offerings was to appease the spirits and fairies in our culture. Our ancestors believed that there were spirits in the house and its surroundings and by pleasing them, our crops would flourish. If these offerings were not made, the crops would fail or be infested with pests. They also believed that the wheat harvest could not begin until satrbfa was performed and until the offerings were made, they would not eat fruits like mulberries. Trefuing and satrbfa offerings were essentially acts of devotion and thanksgiving.
